In 1956\, Swedish poet Harry Martinson (1904–1978) wrote and published his epic poetry suite depicting a spaceship that has lost its course after leaving an earth devastated by war and environmental disaster. His audience was surprised to read this new kind of poetry by their beloved and quite rurally oriented poet. The poems formed the basis for the opera Aniara (1959)\, with a libretto by Erik Lindegren and music by Karl-Birger Blomdahl. The opera was a huge success and toured internationally. \nIn our adaptation of Aniara\, we chose the poems that depict the female pilot Isagel. We wanted to find a way of picturing her relation to the work’s narrator Mimaroben: a relation that is full of mutual respect and fascination for deep scientific thought\, as well as shared abhorrence for the cold\, dark and lonely space outside of the ship. They also share concerns for the remaining few humans and their hopeless future. \nTickets can also be purchased at the door! \nJourneys in Time and Space is a concert by Göteborg International Organ Festival in collaboration with the Parish of Örgryte and Göteborg Art Sounds. \nFoto: Shai Levi

SUMMARY:Alex Smoke [UK]
DESCRIPTION:His main interest is in combining traditional forms of composition and musicianship with the more experimental approaches allowed by modern technology. \nInitially trained in classical cello\, drums and singing\, then progressing to electronic production under a range of monikers including Wraetlic\, he has since increasingly focussed on sound for picture\, psycho-acoustics and collaborations with visual artists and orchestral musicians. Recent work has included scoring BBC science programmes\, Order & Disorder and Mechanical Marvels: Clockwork Dreams\, composing a score for Scottish Ballet’s Sibilo and providing music for various other film projects. He also regularly collaborates with visual artist Florence To on installation performances under the name of CØV and Nagoya-based Vokoi on the audiovisual performance project Wraetlic. \nCreation\nFor Creation\, Alex Smoke draws on the Eastern musical tradition that a performance should respond to its own unique environment\, circumstances and audience. He has created a musical instrument: a seven string zither\, which generates harmonics and overtones when its strings are played. As the zither’s repeated\, amplified notes encircle and flow around his audience\, Smoke will use vocals and the chimes of bells to build a spiralling sonic meditation. \nThis concert is curated by Cathie Boyd. \nLinks:\nhttps://alexsmoke.com/\nhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/6x9vRR3sKuI18TqfPqXcvk?si=TJj5pKGsRne0SkxmCkE20A

SUMMARY:France Jobin & Markus Heckmann [CA/DE]
DESCRIPTION:Entanglement is an artistic project at the crossroads of scientific research inspired by the concept and properties of entanglement in quantum physics and quantum fields theory. The sources of inspiration of France Jobin and Markus Heckmann are based on the two current dominant theories explaining quantum entanglement: the Copenhagen interpretation and the multiverse. In addition to these two theories\, there is the fluidity of time and the principle of quantum entanglement. The Entanglement AV performance is inspired by the same theories; an ambitious immersive experience that has also been translated into Entanglement xr and it is part of Mutek’s Immersive collection. \nAbout France Jobin \nFrance Jobin is a sound artist\, composer and curator residing in Montreal\, Canada. Her audio art can be qualified as “sound-sculpture”\, revealing a minimalist approach to complex sound environments where analog and digital intersect. Her installations express a parallel path\, incorporating both musical and visual elements inspired by the architecture of physical spaces. Her works can be experienced in a variety of unconventional spaces and new technology festivals across the world. Since 2009\, her focus has been related to Quantum mechanics. Many of her projects are inspired by theories related to topics such as vacuum decay\, string theory and more recently\, what she feels to be the most perplexing phenomenon in the world of the quantum\, entanglement resulting in a first presentation\, Entanglement A/V\, with visual artist Markus Heckmann\, which delves into the realms of quantum physics premiered at Mutek Mtl 2021. \nAbout Markus Heckmann \nBorn in Germany in 1977\, Markus Heckmann studied Media-technology at the University of Ilmenau and the Bauhaus University in Weimar before obtaining in 2006 the position of Technical Director at Derivative\, the maker of TouchDesigner\, in Toronto. Heckmann’s personal works have always tended to combine the aesthetic aspects of generative computer graphics with the almost physical aspects of light. Apart from producing visuals and installations for artists like Carsten Nicolai or applications to control the KineticLights of WHITEvoid\, he occasionally takes care of visual stimuli at techno events under the nickname Wüstenarchitekten. \nLinks: \nhttps://www.francejobin.com/ \nhttps://project1.net/

SUMMARY:Pierre-Luc Lecours & Ida Toninato [CA]
DESCRIPTION:Inner Seas is an audiovisual performance that revolves around the theme of water\, its movements\, its energy. With this project\, Ida Toninato and Pierre-Luc Lecours create a hybrid universe\, at the crossroads of instrumental and electronic worlds\, where baritone saxophone\, modular synthesizer and electric guitar meet. The two creators are accompanied by video projections generated by the sound and projected on two screens placed behind the musicians. \nPierre-Luc Lecours \nPierre-Luc Lecours is a composer and multidisciplinary artist based in Montréal. His artistic practice covers many different mediums and aesthetics\, ranging from music to video and performance. His work is characterized by a search for expressiveness in projects exploring an artistic process aimed at drawing relationships between form\, format\, and content. His influences come as much from the currents of instrumental and electroacoustic contemporary music as from electronic and experimental music. His performances feature everyday objects combined with traditional instrumentation and written-down scoring. \nIda Toninato \nSaxophonist and composer Ida Tonniato lives in Montreal (QC). Her artistic practice delves in acoustic exploration\, reverberant spaces as she creates sonic hybrid universes in which instrumental and electronic are intimatelly intertwinde. Her most recent album\, We Become giants\, has been entirely composed in a former water cistern with a 40 seconds long reverb (Dragon’s eye recordings\, 2020). Her collaborations have roots in different styles and medium\, such as contemporary and improvised music\, ambient and cinema. \n  \nLinks: \nhttps://pierreluclecours.com/ \nhttps://www.idatoninato.com/

SUMMARY:Sonia Killmann [UK]
DESCRIPTION:Sonia has been exploring the relationship between sound and environment. Her works often involve field recordings\, as well as a mixture of live processing and audiovisual music. Combining her background in electronic music\, digital media and new music\, Sonia is a graduate of the University of Glasgow and went onto to complete her MA in composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. \nSonia is also a versatile saxophone player and an experienced performer in both live electronic and acoustic music across venues in Europe. Aside from performing\, she has also showcased her installations in venues\, such as the Riverside Museum in Glasgow. In September 2021 Sonia performed Them! There! Eyes? live at Construction Festival in Dnipro (Ukraine). The performance took place at the Palace of Children and Youth. She also showcased this work in February 2021 as part of Sonic Bites.\n\nThem! There! Eyes?\nSonia Killmann’s highly stylised audiovisual work addresses the concept of eye contact as a powerful feature in creating emotional bonds. Consisting of broken up and heavily processed samples of Ella Fitzgerald’s recording of Them There Eyes\, merged with synthesizer sounds and field recordings\, the singer’s voice becomes unrecognisable as it accompanies extracts of Fritz Lang’s pioneering sci-fi epic\, Metropolis. \nThis concert is curated by Cathie Boyd. \nLinks:\nhttps://sonia-killmann.com/work\nhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1ByUCmEgEIXAwwH2Ml0ITg

SUMMARY:Zwerm [BE]
DESCRIPTION:Zwerm is an electric guitar quartet based in Belgium and founded in 2007. Over the years the group has collaborated with various composers\, performers and visual artists. Zwerm has never strived for a one-sided artistic profile. During the past fifteen years the quartet dallied between experimental rock\, English renaissance music and contemporary compositions. The common denominator being not so much a particular stylistic view but rather a shared curiosity in all kinds of music. \nThe two pieces that comprises Our Ears Felt Like Canyons II were composed for Zwerm during a period of intense and worldwide changes. Both of the works are an invitation to submerge into an almost physical world of sound. \n‘The piece Curtains was created at a time when the meaning of the word war started to change from something far away into something that came very close. One might be tempted to add iron to the title\, but it is up to the listener to decide which curtains should be opened and which one should be closed. Avaeken is named after the millenium-plus-old oak on the island of Fårö in Gotland\, Sweden. This royal tree has survived and lived through unfathomable time and weather and serves as a reminder of the brevity of human experience in immense time-space and inspiration\, consciousness place and presence. The piece was composed during the month of November 2020\, when the composer sheltered on Fårö in retreat and recovery during the Covid-19 pandemic. \nThis concert is curated by Joost Fonteyne. \nLinks:\nhttp://www.zwerm.be/

SUMMARY:Göteborgs Symfoniker – The Mighty Sound of Organ and Orchestra [SE]
DESCRIPTION:Organist Christian Schmitt handles the cheeky organ part in Poulenc’s concerto with the same skill as in Barber’s Toccata Festiva – masterfully. SUMMARY:GAS Talks – Fenoba Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:From October 18-20 the 2022 edition of Göteborg Art Sounds will be host to the Fenoba conference\, gathering festival promoters and organizers from Denmark\, Norway\, FInland\, Iceland\, Estonia and Sweden. The conference itself is not open to the public\, so we thought it would be a good idea to invite some of the conference participants to be part of an open panel discussion\, reflecting on some of the topics from the conference: \n\nCan we see the festival regarded as a cultural event where opportunities are given for manifestations of freedom of speech\, clear statements and political engagement through artistic expression?\nHow can we expand and defend the festival’s significance and place\, where we as individuals as well as members of society can be given a space to think and feel freely together?\nCould the festival of the future be a place for resistance and confrontation\, while at the same time a place for contemplation and reflection?\n\nAbout Fenoba\nFenoba is a Nordic Baltic Network for music festivals\, initiated by the GAS-festival. The idea behind the network is to create an exchange of artists and collaborations between countries and create an openness between festivals. The network is also meant to be a tool for its members and their ideas\, and a platform to enable learning between Nordic and Baltic music festivals and organizers. \nThe Fenoba network consist of Spor (DK)\, G((o))ng Tomorrow (DK)\, Klang-festival (DK)\, Estonian Music Days (EE)\, Baltic Music Days (EE/LV/LT)\, Musica nova Helsinki (FI)\, Dark Music Days (IS)\, Cycle Music and Art Festival (IS)\, Ultima (NO)\, Punkt (NO)\, Göteborg Art Sounds (SE) and concert organisers Lithuanian Composers’ Union (LT)\, Latvian Composers’ Union (LV). \nRead more here.

SUMMARY:Herman Müntzing [SE] presents MORF 1
DESCRIPTION:On October 16\, Herman will lead a workshop with the students of Kulturskolan Askim-Frölunda-Högsbo. The starting point for the workshops is his piece MORF1\, that will later be presented for the audience at Frölunda kulturhus. For the concert\, Herman will be joined on stage by six students from Högskolan för Scen och Musik and Kulturskolan Askim-Frölunda-Högsbo respectively\, saxophonist Jonny Wartel and pianist Karin Johansson as well as Peter Hogenäs\, teacher at Högskolan för Scen och Musik. \nAbout MORF 1 \nMORF 1 is a piece in which the course of events is defined by instructions written on \ncards. Each card presents instructions to follow and implement in a sonic action. The piece puts focus on improvisation and intuitive sonic communication\, on the balance between individuality and adaptation\, slow process of change\, and openness concerning content and shape. The piece offers a possibility of polyphonic\, intricate fabric of sounds with the instructions from the cards individually interpreted by the participants. The shape of the piece is totally connected to the unique mix of participants during the current event. MORF 1 refers to no specific genre and welcomes everyone with interest in intuitive and spontaneous sonic collaboration\, with a strive towards community and togetherness. \nSince the creation of the piece in 2005\, MORF 1 has been performed on numerous occasions\, and with very different ensembles. With professional musicians and with amateurs\, on prestigious festivals for experimental music as well as small jazz clubs\, art galleries\, private living rooms\, museums\, art- and music academies. \n  \nAbout Herman Müntzing \nHerman Müntzing is an experimental and improvising musician and composer from Baskemölla\, Sweden\, who prefers to treat and mistreat different kinds of acoustic and electric objects whenever and wherever it is appropriate. His musical world embraces sounds produced by “normal” musical instruments as well as short-circuit video-mixers\, children toys\, found objects and slowly rolling ping-pong balls. He is also the creator of 12 stringed experimental instrument “Flexichord” built out of strings and pickups from 2 electric guitars attached to a piece of massive wood. He performs concerts and workshops mainly in Europe\, due to a stubborn decision about never ever traveling by airplane. So he travels mostly by train\, performing solo and with groups\, with various musicians from the “improv-scene” and with people who don’t even consider themselves being musicians. \nThis concert is a collaboration with Brötz\, Högskolan för Scen och Musik and Kulturskolan Askim-Frölunda-Högsbo. \n  \nLinks:\nhttps://www.hermanmuntzing.com/index.html
